“Emotional Sobriety has been an integral part of my recovery journey. I have never been to a meeting that discusses topics that relate to everyone in such a personal way. In my opinion, working on the fundamental reasons that brought me into recovery are exactly what I need to find serenity and peace in my life as a recovering alcoholic.”

Chrissy S.

CASE STUDY: ROB G.

At 34 Rob had been sober for nearly 3 years and like a lot of people in recovery during the shutdown Rob had found himself needing more than he was getting from other virtual meetings.

“Times were tough. I was missing the connection at in-person meetings and I hadn’t been sober that long. I was your typical restless, irritable and discontent sober alcoholic.”

Staying physically sober wasn’t a big concern for Rob. At least not at the point he logged on to his first virtual meeting. He had spent 4 months in a sober living house after a 30-day stint in rehab. Now back with his wife he found that it was the emotional triggers that were causing him problems. Behavioral relapses from triggers including envy, self-pity and greed.

He admitted he wasn’t emotionally well balanced and needed to get back on track if he was to avoid a relapse with alcohol.

He has a new appreciation for his sobriety as a result of becoming emotionally sober. He knew that just because he quit alcohol he wasn’t fixed. He said,

“just the opposite. When the fog lifted after a few months my defective behavior became obvious. I suffered from those emotional hangovers I read about in the 10th Step. I didn’t want to trade one kind of hangover for another. I wanted a better life and discussing these topics in depth has made a huge difference. I even discuss topics at home with my wife.”
